Tolkien mentions his visit to London where he met Rayner Unwin. He met Mr. Wilson, who he described as "the small old Scot who seems to reign over that large book-kingdom". He is waiting on proofs that were meant to arrive that day but had not.

He goes on to say that he must let Mr. Tiller of the BBC have a proof copy to help him prepare for the BBC's dramatic version of volume 1, which will be accompanied by music.

He and Priscilla are preparing for a trip to Italy, and he mentions he speaks no Italian, though can read a little.
