Tolkien opens with news of the terrible year the family have had. Christopher has had a bad heart and in bad health the entire year. More than a dozen friends have died in the past year, including Tolkien's close friend E.V. Gordon.
Tolkien notes that Oxford is changing for the worse, saying that it is no longer a University town. Its dialect is changing and shops vanish for the look of London. Morris Motors has encroached on the town and with it comes workers and more industry.
