Tolkien wrote to his Aunt, Jane Neave enclosing a signed copy of The Hobbit.
This letter and the book were described with some short quotes and an image of the first page in Sotheby's catalogue English Literature, History, Fine Bindings, Private Press Books, Children’s Books, Illustrated Books and Drawings, 10 July 2003. Lot 469 (pp.294-5).
As fate had it, the letter and book were never sent and the letter remained in Tolkien's possession. He saw Jane in early October and had wrote her another letter dated 6 October.
The letter also featured on the BBC TV programme The Antiques Roadshow.
