Tolkien together with the poet Wilfred Rowland Childe wrote to the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer to defend the World War One (WW1) memorial by sculptor Eric Gill. The memorial frieze was criticised for its depiction of "Christ driving the Moneychangers from the Temple".
