Rayner Unwin writes offering Pauline Baynes the job of illustrating The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses from the Red Book. This will include cover illustrations, and possible embellishments on the title page. He explains that the price has to be kept low as it is a childrens book and he proposes a fee of £200. If Baynes is interested, Rayner will have the poems, specimen pages with notation of positions for illustrations. It should be finished and ready for the Christmas market.
Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull note this letter in Chronology and that Joy Hill writes to Tolkien informing him of the offer to Pauline Baynes. She asks Tolkien to let them know of the changes he will make to 'Bombadil Goes Boating' along with the outstanding blurb and introduction.see Letter from Joy Hill (GA&U) to J.R.R.
