G.B. Smith writing to Tolkien while he was visiting his Aunt Mabel at Abbotsford, Moseley, Birmingham suggesting, again, that he ask Stainforth what he wants him to do about joining his Company.
He gives him more advice about the equipment he should precure and notes that the War Office will write to him when he is gazetted.
He is very pleased that Tolkien got a First at Oxford.
He gives Tolkien some suggestions of books he should bring with him: one on oriental painting; 1914 and Other Poems by Rupert Brooke, Georgian Poetry, Browne’s Religio Medici and Urn Burial, Sir Philip Sidney’s Defence of Poesie; and Sir Francis Bacon’s Essays.
