G.B. Smith wrote to Tolkien on or around 10 July 1915, he suggests the notice Tolkien would receive from the War Office would be the ‘gazetting’.
Tolkien and the Great War says that on 10 July Smith wrote to Tolkien that he admired Rupert Brooke's poetry and thought Tolkien should read it (we assume this is the same letter).
Tolkien wrote a letter on 11 July (see Letter from G.B. Smith (?) to J.R.R. Tolkien • 11 July 1915 (#1274)) stating ‘I have at last been gazetted’.
