Tolkien replies stating he is very pleased at the illustrations for Farmer Giles of Ham. He says that after seeing the images, his friends, "very justly", said that "they had reduced the text to a commentary on the pictures".
Tolkien feels the reproductions have cost the images, given the size is so small but even though they are reduced in size, they make the text much more interesting. He hopes soon to have a much larger work published, that work, The Lord of the Rings is being typed.
