Tolkien writes back to Furth in regards to the dustjacket design for The Hobbit. Furth wrote on April 15th Letter from C.A. Furth (GA&U) to J.R.R. Tolkien • 15 April 1937 (#1870)[1] that the pink hue that Tolkien put on the mountains make them look "a trifle[!] like a cake." Tolkien has redrawn the jacket in the correct size to fit the book this time, and removed the pink from the mountains but the sun and dragon are still red. He also returns his original paper model of the jacket design, but leave final design decisions to Furth.See The Hobbit 50th Anniversary commemorative booklet, and The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide for various quotes from the letter, Bibliography for significant quoted material, and The Art of the Hobbit for a visual reproduction of the revised jacket with notes for the printer.[2]

The letter is kept at the Tolkien-George Allen & Unwin archive.
