Tolkien asks Rayner Unwin for an update on galleys for The Lord of the Rings. He hopes that there will be little work as the copy was “pretty good”. He will work on the matter of maps and drawings for the first volume.
In an unpublished portion,Chronology, p. 422[1] Tolkien says that from 11 June he will be back into school matters and 17 June through 16 July he will be required to work long days (up to 14 hours a day). Before that he will work on the maps and 'Doors of Durin'.
He inquires as to when the printer will require more manuscripts and does not see that he can get away for more than a day or two during the vacation. He will not be attending the “big 'Anglistic” conference in ParisThe Second International Conference of University Professors of English, held in Paris, August, 1953[2] and hopes to put The Lord of the Rings into final form before the next term starts.
