Tolkien, writing to Allen & Unwin, encloses possible jacket designs, one for The Fellowship of the Ring, and another for The Two Towers.^{Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull note that it likely that other pieces are also included: five designs for the Fellowship jacket, three for Two Towers. They also note the designs as “lettering, a crown, a ship, and the hand and arm of Sauron”, see Art of The Lord of the Rings, figs. 176-185.[1]} Describing them as “notions”, Tolkien says that they are technically deficient but hopes someone with better ability may be able to “produce something” out of them.
