Tolkien, writing to Allen & Unwin, encloses possible jacket designs, one for The Fellowship of the Ring, and another for The Two Towers.Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull note that it likely that other pieces are also included: five designs for the Fellowship jacket, three for Two Towers. They also note the designs as “lettering, a crown, a ship, and the hand and arm of Sauron”, see Art of The Lord of the Rings, figs. 176-185.[1] Describing them as “notions”, Tolkien says that they are technically deficient but hopes someone with better ability may be able to “produce something” out of them.
