Tolkien has drawn a sketch for Volume III,Return of the King[1] but says he won't show it to Rayner as it is not constructive to point out the artificial divisions in the volumes.
He notes that he is unsure which version of his designs Rayner prefers but hopes it is the version with the “three subsidiary rings”, pointing out that it is more suited to the story.see Artist and Illustrator, p. 179, fig. 177; Art of The Lord of the Rings, p. 211, fig. 167[2]
Tolkien suggests the titling is set in a simple “Black Letter type”. Tolkien notes that he is hopeful that Allen & Unwin can convince the American publishers, Houghton Mifflin Co., to adopt the same design.see Chronology, p. 448-9[3]
The letter is found at the Tolkien–George Allen & Unwin archive, HarperCollins
