Tolkien had written to Wiseman after hearing of the death of his mother. Wiseman congratulates Tolkien on the news that he and Edith are expecting a child and notes that he has heard from Mrs. Incledon to say that Tolkien is still in hospital.
He approves of Tolkien's arrangement of G.B. Smith's poems and enjoyed the poem of Tolkien's that was included with his last letter.
Wiseman discusses a leader, in the Times Literary Supplement from 20 September, 1917 in which an anonymous person wrote about invention and imagination, in an article entitled 'Creation and Invention'. He says that he sees creation in Tolkien's poem 'Copernicus and Ptolemy' and invention in his mythology.
