On 7 July, Tolkien was examined at the Medical Board and was declared unfit for general service but was fit for 'home service'. He is ordered "to return to O.U.T.C.^{Officers’ University and Technical Classes[1]} Oxford to complete his course" the Ministry of Labour will be informed.

He is then informed on this day that he is released from military service^{Taking affect the following day, 16 July 1919[2]} and should attend the Dispersal Unit at Fovant, Wiltshire on 15 July to collect his forms.^{See further, Chronology, pp. 116-7, entries for '7 June 1919', '8 July 1919' and '15 July 1919'[3]}
