Tolkien unsuccessfully applies for the position^{The chair is filled by Laschelles Abercrombie[1]} left vacant by George S. Gordon's resignation to take up the Merton Professor's chair at Oxford. Though this is a blow to Tolkien, he will be told by Michael Sadler that the university hopes to create a new Professorship of English Language for him specifically.
