Tolkien writes to Rayner Unwin, including the Zimmerman story-lineThis formed part of Letter #210 from The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Carpenter #210: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Forrest J. Ackerman • 9 June 1958 (#584).[1] along with the cover note to Ackerman.

Tolkien tells Rayner that he does not want "to kill the project", which he believes has promise, especial from the concept artwork he has seen. But he dismisses Zimmerman and tells Rayner that he does not have the "competence" to do the work justice. If his commentary is too stiff, Rayner should change it, but notes that he will not accept the project as it stands without a far greater "compensation in cash" than the project funders can offer.

1 This formed part of Letter #210 from The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Carpenter #210: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Forrest J. Ackerman • 9 June 1958 (#584).
