TCG Letter #1861

From
Richard Hughes
To
Allen & Unwin
Date
5 October 1937
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Partial
Allen & Unwin had sent copies of The Hobbit to various authors in order to solicit reviews. Hughes's response was used for publicity materials to advertise The Hobbit later that year.

Hughes writes that it was one of the best stories for children he had come across, and that Tolkien's writing was very evocative and saturated in mythology. He thought some parents might be concerned about scaring their children, but doesn't think this is an issue. He writes "if you don't give them dragons to be frightened of they will frighten themselves with an old chest-of-drawers."
