TCG Letter #1987

From
Stanley Unwin
To
J.R.R. Tolkien
Date
11 October 1937
Type
Typed Letter Signed
Transcript
Complete
Stanley Unwin writes to Tolkien telling him that The Hobbit is selling well, and had good reviews in the Times Literary Supplement and The Times itself. They have received a very complementary letter from Richard Hughes, which Stanley attaches a copy for Tolkien to read. Stanley also reports that his boy (Rayner), who reviewed the typescript, has now read the published book again and has "even increased enthusiasm" for it. Stanley warns Tolkien that "a large public will be clamouring next year to hear more from you about Hobbits!"

Note that a file copy of this letter from the publisher has been seen, which is unsigned, but it is assumed that the copy sent to Tolkien was signed.
