GA&U send the five colour illustrations (sent from Houghton Mifflin Co.) to Tolkien.
In their Companion and Guide, Chronology, p. 223, Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull note that GAU had to retrieve the illustrations from HMCo. to get them ready for the second printing of The Hobbit, and that they would then be returned to HMCo.. But their entry for 5 March 1938 (p. 228) states that the illustrations are returned to "him", which I take to mean Tolkien. [onthetrail]
