Writing to GA&U, Wrenn notes the chaotic nature of the Clark Hall Beowulf volume and asks for more time to complete the work. He includes the introduction and the first 450 lines of the Clark Hall text of Beowulf.
Tolkien had been working on the volume over some years for GA&U but ultimately could not devote the time needed and in the end suggested Wrenn for the project.
