Tolkien has been enjoying reading Stenton's Anglo-Saxon England, and wishes he had a time-machine. Tolkien tells Christopher that this is the history "of our peculiar people", and other than the thin strand of ancestors that brought the 'Tolkien' name, most of their background is Mercian or Hwiccian on both sides of the family.
