Tolkien responds to a letter from a fellow King Edward's School student, reminiscing a bit about his time there, his friends who were killed in WWI and what connection his still has with Birmingham these many years later. He is happy that Banton has read his "romance" The Lord of the Rings (the first two parts).

Note: the transcript given in the Gazette has a small (inferred) error in the fourth paragraph: daughters > daughter
