Tolkien remarks that he would be comforted if Christopher could be re-commissioned out of the R.A.F. Christopher had recently returned from service. He goes on to liken Christopher's time to Frodo, remarks that his "sentiments are more or less those that Frodo would have had if he discovered some Hobbits learning to ride Nazgûl-birds". He says that he would not, if a free man, give a penny to "this remaining war", nevermind a son and closes saying that America and Russia are the only beneficiaries of it.
