Tolkien writes an apologetic letter to to Burchfield at the Oxford University Press, who had sent Tolkien a proposed definition of hobbit to be included in the Oxford English Dictionary (in December of the prior year). He has been having a very difficult year and just now discovered the letter from Burchfield, and worries that his response will be too late, as the proposed definition for hobbit is incorrect.
