Gilson writes that Barnsley tried to persuade him to join the Old Edwardian recruits in the 'Birmingham Battalion'. He also says that his father (Robert Cary Gilson) wanted him to finish school before enlisting, and not to abandon Cambridge as the University needed to ensure a future supply of officers for the war effort.
