TCG Letter #2345

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
William E. Ratliff
Date
25 August 1967
Type
Typed Letter Signed
Transcript
Complete
William Ratliff had written to Tolkien, presumably about the Hippie movement in the USA (Ratliff published a long article on this topic a few months later, and possibly sent a draft of his article as well). Tolkien says he is aware of "the phenomenon" but not going to take time away from other projects to think about it, and is not interested in further information. Tolkien concludes by saying that he can only write what he likes for himself, and he cannot control what other people decide to think or do with those writings.
