(did you mean Carpenter's Letter #238?)

TCG Letter #238

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Mrs Earle
Date
12 April 1956
Type
Autograph Letter Signed
Transcript
Complete
Written shortly after the publication of his new trilogy, Tolkien's letter comprises a thoughtful reply to a fan, Mrs Earle, who evidently was so excited that he wrote before he had even finished the series. The reply touches on some of Tolkien's inspirations for Lord of the Rings, steeped in his own academic scholarship and personal interests, and a brief history of the name "Tolkien."

The letter was reproduced in full in the Heritage Auction listing in 2022.

A complete transcript along with the auction advertisement can be seen at the Marquette archives.
