Tolkien receives a message via the International Red Cross from Simonne d'Erdenne. At that time, beginning in April 1942, Nazi Germany refused to relay any messages of detainees in Europe unless they were of Aryan heritage. This later extended to citizens of countries under occupation, which Belgium had been since 1940 when its soldiers surrendered to German forces. It was liberated by allied forces from 1944 to 1945.
