Tolkien sends to his publisher, the first chapter of a new book, the sequel to The Hobbit. ‘A Long-expected Party’, the first chapter of this book, the not yet titled The Lord of the Rings. He also encloses errata for The Hobbit found by a reader, and his son Christopher.

In the revised 2023 edition of Letters, a single sentence is restored, with Tolkien confirming that he has received the four copies of the Hobbit.Which he requested in Carpenter #21: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to C.A. Furth (Allen & Unwin Ltd.) • 1 February 1938 (#24)/[1]
