Writing to C.A. Furth, Tolkien offers an update with his work on The Lord of the Rings. He has not worked on since December but feels it is a better work than The Hobbit. It is not especially suitable as a sequel as it is for adults but does contain Hobbits, Gandalf, among other characters found in The Hobbit.
His good friend E.V. Gordon had recently died, and Tolkien has been helping with matters arrising from this. He has been unwell, and examinations have been hard.
