Written while Tolkien was training as part of the Lancashire Fusiliers.He was stationed at Rugeley Camp, Staffordshire.[1] He is working on his poem 'Kotirion among the Trees' and mentions sending it to the T.C.B.S.The Tea Club and Barrovian Society. This group was made up of Tolkien and his friends, including Chris Wiseman, G.B. Smith, Rob Gilson and others.[2]
