Tolkien wrote a series of letters to his cousin Dorothy Wood and Sotheby's auction house quoted from many. Among those that no date could be determined come the following quotes.

"...I shall not be missed - having only a function as an ornament (like an old clock of uncertain accuracy on the mantelpiece)..." - on The Silmarillion "...my publisher came last week-end... on a visit to stir me up to more production..." - about his writing and relationship with his publishers "...the production of the works that I am under contract to complete is all too slow. However, my relations with my publishers are quite unique..."
