Howard McCord was a creative writing professor at Washington State University when he wrote a letter to Tolkien. He compliments Tolkien on The Fellowship of the Ring saying that it had brought him many delightful hours.
Tolkien's reply was written on the back of the envelope but Mr. McCord could not understand what Tolkien had written so sent it back to Tolkien to decipher. Tolkien wrote originally in pencil then deciphered in red ink. Tolkiens reply and deciphered dated reply are written in his own handwriting (no signature). Tolkien also corrected Mr. McCords spelling of Tolkien's last name on McCord's original typed letter (ei to ie) in red ink.
