From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Sigurður Nordal
Date
20 August 1933 (and other undated letter from this period)
Type
Autograph Letter Signed
Transcript
Partial
In the first letter sent to Sigurður Nordal, dated August 20th 1933, Tolkien mentions that the diploma of honorary membership of the Bókmentāfélag arrived in July. He thanks Nordal for the book (EiglaNordal, Sigurður (ed.), Egills saga Skallagrímssonar, Íslenzk fornrit, 2 (Reykjavík, 1933)[1] ) and says it is beautiful. He mentions his work load, examining in Oxford, Reading and Manchester.

In the second letter, undated but most certainly from the same period, Tolkien is discussing plans for Nordal's arrival and stay in Oxford. It appears that Turville-Petre will also be present.

In the third letter, again undated, in a post script Tolkien talks about Miss Colman being likely elected to the lectureship in Icelandic. He asks if she can help with Icelandic.
