Reverend Father Aurelius Pompen (Professor of English at the Catholic University of Nijmegen) had contacted Tolkien Letter from Aurelius Pompen to J.R.R. Tolkien • c. June to August 1936 (#1830)[1] asking if the family could take in a paid guest. Tolkien starts with his well known opening of apologising for his late reply. Although Tolkien would welcome the financial help he regrets that due to family health issues they would not be able to accomodate a guest.

Tolkien continues that he should have replied sooner but he was going away and his wife was not home. He explains that they currently only have the help of a maid very briefly and could accept the guest.

He notes that it is now too late to help but he will be of any assistance he can. He concludes that he has written a note to Miss Tombrock. Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Miss Tombrock • c. 27 September 1936 (#1831)[2]
