Tolkien writes, thanking Lanier for the book The War for the Lot by Lanier himself. Tolkien says that he found it quite original, and frightening. Tolkien queries how it arrived.

Tolkien then goes on to talk about The Silmarillion, saying it is mostly grim and has no comedy.
