Tolkien writes to C. A. Furth of GA&UHumphrey Carpenter gives this letter as "Undated; February or March 1937" but we know from Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull that this letter is dated c. 10 March, 1937 and we accept that dating as very close to when Tolkien in fact wrote and sent this letter.[1] acknowledging the two drawings which were “safely received”, he has placed them in the correct positions among the proof-sheets.

He is also sending corrected proofs and rough end-papers in a seperate package. Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to George Allen & Unwin • ?10 March 1937 (#1854)[2]

He comments on the type-setting, it is in the whole done very well. He continues on the subject of the proofs, the MS of The Hobbit and asks if a “season of publication” has been decided on? If it is earlier publication, he will attempt to sort the jacket at once.
