In secret, Allen & Unwin had been putting a 'Festschrift' together to present to Tolkien on his 70th birthday.English and Medieval Studies Presented to J.R.R. Tolkien on the Occasion of his Seventieth Birthday, 1962[1] Tolkien writes to to congratulate Rayner for keeping him in the dark.
Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull noteChronology, pp. 632-3.[2] that Tolkien asks for twenty-four copies of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, on top of the copies owed to him as author copies. He also provides a list of five people overseas who he would like Allen & Unwin to send copies to.
