Writing to his step-mother, Rob Gilson mentions that G.B. Smith and T.K. Barnsleyknown as 'Tea-Cake'[1] have agreed to play on Tolkien's team in the Rugby football match but only if he himself is there too. He decribes this as a "left-handed compliment", basically meaning that he is consider a poor player.
