Mary [Wiseman]Mary St. John, OSB (Order of Saint Benedict), sister of Christopher Wiseman[1] writes to Tolkien asking if he would send her a presentation copy of The Hobbit.onthetrail note: I have as yet found no evidence that Tolkien did send a copy of the book, but he would in September 1954 request to Rayner Unwin for a copy of The Fellowship of the Ring to be sent to Mary St John. This detail was not published as part of the letter (#149) but noted by Hammond/Scull, see Chronology, p. 462[2] In return she will send him prayers.Hammond/Scull note that she has taken a vow of poverty, hence her offer to pay in prayers. Chronology, p. 216[3]
