Daphne Castell (later Cloke) interviewed Tolkien circa 1966. This letter, along with three others Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Daphne Castell • 28 September 1954 (#1046) Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Daphne Castell • 6 March 1973 (#1047) and another typed, undated and unsigned letter[1] and an annotated transcript of her notes for the interview, were sold at Sotheby's in 1983 (see reference below).
Tolkien writes that he will not give interviews unless he sees the questions to be asked beforehand.
He describes the analysis of his writing being as ". . .comparable to a man who having enjoyed some food . . . used an emetic before digestion was complete and sent the regurgitation to be chemically analysed. . ."onthetrail note: This quote likely derives from Tolkien's notes on his interview, written on the transcript which was sent to him.[2]
