To
E.V. Gordon
Date

Type

Transcript

Tolkien writes to his friend, E.V. Gordon, and says that he is willing to help with the reduction of his volume on Pearl. He remarks however, that he is opposed to a drastic reduction.Hammond/Scull noted this letter and also suggest that a reduction in the Pearl manuscript was at the suggestion of Kenneth Sisam. See Chronology, p. 221. It should be noted that Sisam often had a habit of requesting titles be reduced for cost. He was very successful during his time at the Oxford University Press (working under R.W. Chapman) having put dozens of volumes into print, to much success. To the surprise of many, Tolkien was chosen over Sisam and elected Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1925.[1]
