E.V. Gordon writes to Kenneth Sisam after receiving Tolkien's letter. Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to E.V. Gordon • ?1 December 1937 (#2116)[1] Tolkien and he will attempt to reduce the Pearl manuscript for publication but he says that it might take some time to finish.As fate has it, Tolkien could not dedicate time to it and Gordon continued the edition until his death in 1938. It would not be published until 1953 when Ida Gordon, his widow prepared it for publication. Tolkien provided help and the book includes his essay 'Form and Purpose' which was used as part of the introduction. He also provided notes and corrections to the volume.[2]
