To
Allen & Unwin Ltd.
Date

Type

Transcript

Tolkien was sent proofs for a new edition of The Hobbit and remarks on how The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are interlinked. He was not expecting his draft rewrite of chapter 5 to be incorporated as he hadn't heard anything back after submitting it for comment Three years prior, in Carpenter #111: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Stanley Unwin • 21 September 1947 (#257)[1] - he assumed they didn't like it, and had proceeded with The Lord of the Rings draft assuming the Hobbit would stay as originally published.

Three separate but overlapping portions of this letter are transcribed in Letters, Chronology and Hammond's Bibliography.

This letter is held in the Tolkien – George Allen & Unwin archive, HarperCollins.
