Tolkien writes to Mr. Furth, expressing his current state of being oppressed and unwell due to recent troubles. He submits Farmer Giles for consideration, noting its altered scope and tone. While acknowledging its potential entertainment value.

In portions which remain unpublished, Tolkien asks about French and German translations of The Hobbit and remarks on an enclosed cutting whoch details interest from the actress Shirley Temple in his works. He also mentions again the Clark Hall Beowulf which he says he would relinquish if he knew anyone who do a good job with it.Chronology, p. 235[1]

It is in this letter that Tolkien appears to first mention the name of the sequel to The Hobbit.See Catherine McIlwaine, Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth, pp. 330-1 for more details.[2]
