Tolkien is still not happy with the appendices going in with The Return of the King, but says that they will have to do. He remarks on the ability of the printers to spot mistakes in the text.
He informs Rayner that he will be away on holidayHammond and Scull note that this trip in fact did not take place due to a rail strike, Chronology, p. 481[1] for part of the summer, but will try and slip away for a time to provide an address for proof consideration.
Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull noteChronolgy, p. 481.[2] that Tolkien returns the Houghton Mifflin draft without any comments on it. He also finds it curious that Houghton Mifflin have sent him six copies of The Two Towers, but none of the Fellowship of the Ring. He also says that they had promised him a folder with review clippings but this has not arrived.As it turns out, Rayner had sent these review clippings to Tolkien and they arrived later on the same day after he had written this letter.[3]
