Sculpture, by Faith Tolkien edited and with Introduction by Simon Tolkien (c) 2005 This is a very rare Tolkien family production, a large 17 inch high by 12 inch wide book which showcases the sculpture work of Faith Tolkien (1928-2017), the first wife of Christopher Tolkien, and the mother of their son, writer Simon Tolkien. The book includes several (all color) sections, on her religious work (notably "The Stations of the Cross") and the various heads and medallions of people she sculpted. These include family members: J.R.R. Tolkien (heads and a medallion), JRRT's son Michael Tolkien, and Faith's son Simon was sculpted a number of times, as a baby and older. Family friends like C.S. Lewis and Iris Murdoch were sculpted too. And others like Robert Aickman, and Robert Maxwell. This copy is a presentation copy, inscribed by Simon Tolkien to Father John Baggley (who is acknowledged as allowing work to be photographed for the book). It is also signed by Faith Tolkien. It is apparently some sort of small print-on-demand edition. The photography and printing are high quality; the binding is a bit less so (some stitching is visible in the gutters of a few pages). The dust-wrapper has a bit of wear on the edges (it is now enclosed in a makeshift mylar protector-- made up of some smaller mylar pieces taped together to cover the oversized dust-wrapper. You can see the tape running down the middle of the main photo of the dust-wrapper--no tape touches the dust-wrapper itself, just the mylar!) Includes two handwritten letters by Simon Tolkien to Father John Baggley, dated 15th April 2008 and 25 May 2008. Also, there is a photocopy of an article "My Mother, the Sculptress" by Simon Tolkien from 2012, discussing her Alzheimer's. Very rare. No copies are listed in libraries (UK or US), and I have seen no copy for sale other than this one, which I bought some years ago. The starting bid is closely related to the price I paid for the book some years ago.
