This coming Sunday evening, around 19.00 (7pm) UK time, I will also be listing on ebay: An HMCo 1938 1st edition US Hobbit (without dust jacket) and A 1937 1st edition, 2nd impression, Allen & Unwin UK Hobbit (without dust jacket) Both at a reasonable buy it now price. and An 1866 Appleton Alice in acceptable condition, which used the 1865 sheets for 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' that were rejected by Lewis Carroll and sold to Appleton in New York. There is a census of the extant copies of the 1866 Appleton Alice as announced by John Lindseth in PBSA some time ago that is still a work in progress. He goes on to say, "Extant copies of what has become known as "The Appleton Alice" have turned out to become quite elusive. The British Library is the only institutional holder found in the UK. Some seventy institutional holders are found in the United States and Canada and one in Switzerland. Fewer than twenty private holders have been identified. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. J.R.R TOLKIEN, The Lord of the Rings, 1954 1st edition,1st printing, Houghton Mifflin Co, Very Good All three in the CORRECT 1st state dust jackets, with most sets offered on the market this is not usually the case. The Fellowship jacket has the required 'd' clipped on Frodo on the 10th line of the rear flap The Two Towers has the required nick in the upright of the 'r' on the front of the jacket, on the word Towers. The Return of the King has the required larger '5' on the $5.00 on the front flap. The Two Towers is price clipped, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King are not. (The Fellowship was released in 1954 without a price on the dust jacket). There are no signatures, inscriptions or book plates. The text is clean throughout. All three books have a very good map present. Scarce
