Up for sale is a complete, 32 piece, vintage Lord of the Rings The Hobbit metal chess set. After my brother and I watched the Rankin & Bass animated 'The Hobbit' (1977), and seem to enjoy it, my mom bought us this chess set as a Christmas gift that year. My brother and I were really more into monsters (models, games, magazines, etc.) and so this set maybe only got used once or twice. And, that would probably account for it being in such good shape. The only piece that I can find with any issues is a knight on the "good guys" side and his dagger has broken off and is long gone (see last photo). A skilled modeler could probably fashion a new dagger if it was that bothersome to have it missing. The tallest pieces (kings and queens) measure approximately 3" tall and the shortest pieces (pawns) measure approximately 1.5" tall. While trying to determine an asking price for this chess set I looked at sold prices for other metal Lord of the Rings chess sets. Two things I found, or, didn't find. There were NO vintage Lord of the Rings chess sets for sale or otherwise. And, the pieces, in this set, have far more detail then their modern counterparts. If you're into the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit and/or the game of chess then this is a really cool set!
